Mental Illness and Discrimination

Every time I vow to update this blog on a regular basis, life intervenes. At the moment, I am working flat out on a research project but hope to return to regular posting soon.

In the meantime, I wanted to draw your attention to another valuable initiative by The Mental Health Council of Australia in conjunction with beyondblue.

Alongside the stigma of mental illness, individuals may also experience discrimination in a number of practical areas. The Mental Health Council of Australia and beyondblue would like to find out about the experiences of mental health consumers in trying to obtain all types of insurance. The aim is to engage with the insurance industry to increase understanding of mental illness and reduce the level of discrimination that people with a mental illness face when applying for insurance.

If you are a mental health consumer and have a few minutes to spare to report your experiences (good and bad), please take the time to complete the survey.

More information on the insurance discrimination project can be obtained from Anna Wise at the Mental Health Council of Australia on (02) 6285 3100 or at anna.wise@mhca.org.au. If you wish to respond by fax to Anna, the fax number is (02) 6285 2166.
